Educator and author Effie Georgine Kuhn, an administrator with the State Teachers College of Trenton, N.J. in the 1940s, was the instigator of the school's effort to stage the American premiere of the historical play CORONA DE SOMBRA (CROWN OF SHADOWS) This play concerned the ill-fated 19th century Emperor Maximilian and his Empress Carlota, and was written by Mexican playwright Rodolfo Usigli (1905-1979), with whom Kuhn corresponded. The papers span 1947-1949, and consist of correspondence concerning the proposed production, largely between Effie Georgine Kuhn and Rodolfo Usigli. In addition to the correspondence, there are also research notes concerning the background of the play's characters, Usigli's prologue to a published edition of the play, brief biographical notes about Usigli himself, and an unsigned, handwritten essay about the play.
